Abstract
Libraries are subscribing to various electronic journals to meet the increased demands of users, which are caused by the changes in information environment. Electronic journals are especially important for medical libraries. In medical libraries, electronic journals can be regarded as the core component since they are a major part of the collection with high utilization rate. To analyze the medical library users¡¯ utilization behavior and service quality perception of electronic journals, this study has surveyed the professors and graduate students at K university school of medicine. The general findings of this study are as follows. First, the results showed that the most frequent use of information by medical school student was to conduct research project and by medical school faculty was to investigate recent research trends in areas of interest. Both students and faculty used the Internet to acquire information with high preference of academic journals. Second, the study found that users preferred electronic journals and used them more frequently than printed journals. It was shown that journals published within 6 months to a year were used most frequently. Third, it was presented that electronic journal use occurred mostly in laboratories and hospitals and was accessed through medical library homepage. PubMed was the most commonly used database, and the preferred method of data acquisition was printing or saving by downloading. On the other hand, it was shown that materials that were not readily available were obtained either through interlibrary loan or consultation with a librarian. Notably, there was a high rate of task abandonment (i.e., giving up of dataacquisition) among graduate school student population. The conclusions of the study are as follows. The study found differences between study groups (i.e., faculty and students) in perception of electronic journal quality. The study also found differences in perception of satisfaction of electronic journals. The most influential factor for the perceptionof satisfaction was supportiveness followed by convenience of use and content resources.
